Hot stone massage is a natural therapy in which warmed stones are positioned on parts of the body of to maximize the therapeutic benefit. The stones used are typically river rocks or other very smooth-surfaced stones made of basalt. These stones are heated in sanitizing water before use. The high iron content in basalt helps the stones retain heat during the massage. Hot stone massages are beneficial on both physical and psychological levels.
Description
Hot stone massage uses a combination of warmed stones and massage techniques to relax tense muscles, relieve pain and stiffness, and improve circulation. The heat of the stones penetrates the skin to promote better blood flow, release toxins and create a deeper muscle relaxation than in a standard massage. By placing the warmed stones over acupressure points we can help release the flow of energy and promote the body’s own healing process. Hot stone massage include 6 steps as below:
Step 1: Line up stones along the spine. Before starting the massage, we put down either a row of large stones where your spine will be or two rows of smaller stones to sit on each side of it.
Step 2: Place four small sized stones on your face. There should be one stone on the forehead, one under the lips and one on each of cheeks.
Step 3: Put medium to large stones along the breastbone, the collarbones, and in your hands. Depending on the height and width of your body, the size of the stones we use may vary. Placing one stone or more on either side of your collarbone, two large ones along the breastbone, and two palm-sized stones in the hands.
Step 4: Use a plam-sized stone to massage the rest of the body. Once we’ve placed all the stones on your front side, take a palm-sized stone and rub it with oil. Then follow the cords of muscles in your body from head to toe to work out any remaining knots. Massage the stones being placed earlier into the skin as well.
Step 5: Turn your body back
Step 6: Put stones on the shoulder blades, the backs of the kneecaps, and between the toes.
Step 7: Take off the stones, slightly massage your body to rebalance the blood circulation and muscles. Clean up the body and finish massage process.
